CHICAGO -- J&A Industrial (Suzhou) Co. has commercialized a new high barrier, multi-layer package that extends the shelf life of a popular corn sausage from Linyi Xincheng JinLuo Meat Products Co., Ltd. The packaging technology preserves the sausage's freshness in demanding high-humidity environments, and represents the first use of polyolefin/SARAN™ co-extruded films for processed meats globally.

JinLuo's corn sausage product contains three to five percent natural corn ingredients. This gives the sausage a sweet flavor but also increases its moisture content. The new package design from J&A Industrial utilizes coextruded SARAN PVDC film to preserve the product's freshness, and does not lose barrier properties when exposed to moisture in the product or the high-humidity environment of southeast China.

"As a leading meat processor, we adopt strict standards in choosing packaging material. Due to the recipe, processing, circulation and other factors in the manufacturing of the corn sausage, we needed a new technology that could provide excellent barrier properties as well as optical clarity," said Zhang LiFeng, General Engineer and Director of R&D for Linyi Xincheng JinLuo Meat Products Co., Ltd. "Traditional EVOH film packaging is sensitive to humidity. When the barrier properties of EVOH weakened, it led to bacteria that caused the meat to rot, the sausage to discolor, and the package to inflate (swell).

Through cooperation with J&A (Suzhou) Industrial and repeated experiments, we found that applying PVDC co-extruded film packaging to the corn sausage has greatly improved both the shelf life and appearance of the product." J&A Industrial chose a SARAN PVDC film for its package because the coextruded film structure is especially beneficial as a high water and oxygen barrier material in highly humid environments. In addition, the film provides high transparency and gloss for excellent optical clarity. The multilayer film structure can be customized to meet many storage and shelf life needs, and can be widely used for food, processed meat, cosmetics and chemical goods, as well as in controlled atmosphere, vacuum and thermoforming packaging, especially for applications that require oxygen barriers in high-humidity environments. Additionally, the film is generally more cost effective due to the elimination or reduction of lamination or coating processes that are required to accomplish barrier and other functionalities demanded by different applications. The excellent barrier properties of SARAN PVDC film also offer downgauging potential for lower total costs.

The innovative packaging has received the Grand Pinnacle Award of the 2005 DuPont China Packaging Award Competition, in recognition of its innovative technology to process thermal sensitive and non thermal sensitive resin with temperature difference together in a co-extrusion process. By applying multi layer heat insulation technology on the equipment, J&A is able to achieve the efficient structure to meet the functional need of sausage packaging by a one step process. The packaging from J&A Industrial is already being used with millions of sausages expected to be sold this year.

The DuPont China Packaging Awards provide a platform for trade professionals to share, learn and brainstorm beneficial improvements and advancements in China's packaging industry. The competition honors innovation in food processing and packaging from across the supply chain - from technology and processes, to equipment and converters, to end use packagers. A sevenmember judging panel of package and food specialists chooses the winners.
